/u/tavofletchpo1 That made my day. Thanks |
/u/Transparent_mindset Indeed. Dogs don't forget love. This is pure loyalty in
its simplest form. |
/u/lollygaggin69 They do sometimes, sadly. I partially raised my
boyfriend's dog in college, he died, his dog went with
our friends, and 2 years later when I saw her again she
snarled and growled at me
:( refused to approach me. broke my heart a little bit. |
/u/WildRabbitz Hey, please don't feel bad about it. The dog would've
recognized you with a bit more of time ❤️ it takes a
bit of time for their smell to remember you! |
/u/lollygaggin69 Thank you for saying that ❤️🩹 that's a good
reminder |
/u/matlspa I second this. Sometimes it can take hours or even a
day. They can't process exactly what's happening when
dealing with new circumstances, apparently |
/u/dme59 Humans can't either! |
/u/NJDevilsMB30 Agreed. I even think it's possible they do know the
smell, but the smell may bring back some memories of
sadness or confusion. (If left suddenly) So it may take
some time to handle/process the feelings that the smell
that disappeared is suddenly back. ❤️ |
/u/moeron17 Id suggest giving it time. It was most likely unsure.
Notice how this dog is very hesitant and anxious at 1st.
At least it appears that way to me; based on its body
language and my years of working with dogs.
Ive had a similar thing happen to me with my folks dog.
Their dog LOVES me. Everytime I come over she loses her
mind, barks, jumps/zooming, super happy and excited.
When they say my name she goes nuts. But last year I
thru hiked the Appalachian trail and was gone for half
the year. When I got back she was TERRIFIED of me. If I
walked into a room shed run to another. She'd cower and
pee when id walk in the door.
After a few weeks coming over occasionally she got
accustomed to me and shes back to loving me. I think it
was partially confusion of me looking and probably
smelling different(residual funk of backpacking for
months straight). As well as confusion what happened and
why I left.
If its possible id urge you to give it another chance
and some time. The pup will probably remember you
eventually. |
/u/FuckingHippies My sister and I lived together for about a year when her
dog was a pup. They moved away. I visited a few years
later and got the same snarling treatment. Total bummer.
But I just tell myself it's because she's protective of
my sister, not angry at me. |
/u/lollygaggin69 Yeah I know she just forgot me, but before that, I had
also thought that dogs never forget humans that loved
them :-/ |
/u/ThisWitch67 Please don't let this upset you. My own dogs sometimes
don't recognize me when I get home from work until they
come up and smell me. I just don't think they see very
well LOL |
/u/NumberOneStonecutter Years ago, my wife and I moved across the country. She
went first for her job. I stayed back with our dog and
completed some renos on our house and sold it. I joined
her maybe 3 months later. When we got off the plane, our
dog basically ignored her. She was heartbroken. What she
didn't realize was he was still sedated from the plane
ride and very out of it. About 20 minutes later when he
realized he was in Momma's lap he flipped out. |
/u/Commercial_Bird8467 See the dog catches a whiff and kinda was thinking it
was not real, then sees a lady who resembles her and was
like oh, well no not her, then notices her like OMG I
WAS RIGHT. |
/u/drittzO Yes, this is exactly how it went down. Dogs flow their
noses. |
/u/nomereddit Flow-low-low-loow-looow-loooow-looooow! Apple-bottom
treats with the boots and the fur!! ... ... early
morning brain. What a fun video. |
/u/girlMikeD don't be a Flowlower, be a leader! |
/u/EuenovAyabayya Yeah I love how the nose went off first and he still
couldn't put it together for a second. |
/u/freeradioforall was there any physical recognition or was he purely
locating the source of her scent? |
/u/explosive-diorama The scent is the physical recognition. Eyes are a
secondary sense for most dogs. |
/u/snotboble By far scent. Hearing also plays a role. Sight less so.
I've had several dogs of various breeds and noticed
that their vision processing seems to categorize in
object types (human, animal etc) and less in for
instance specifically which human they see.
If they hear a voice they recognize, they react
immediately. But less, if at all, if the voice is heard
via an electronic device. And scent - they react even if
something they know was present at the spot several
hours - or days - ago. |
/u/blackviking45 Morality relates directly to reducing suffering in the
long term so this feeling good is good |
/u/Jang_time Mines too. I needed that . Thank you so much I was
having a bad day and this sprung me up. Life's too short
to be upset or mad at those who you love. ❤️ |
/u/Vivid-Mixture3227 For real, there's something about these videos that just
hits different. You can tell he definitely recognized
her. |
/u/Plane_Composer5280 This is my dog when I return from
Throwing the trash out and been away 1 minute |
/u/ignatious__reilly Hahaha, same. Pretty sure my dog has separation anxiety
from me.
Last week I flew to Seattle to visit my brother and was
only away from my dog for a few days. When I landed back
home, my mom picked me up from the airport, and my
Boston Terrier was in the back seat.
The second she saw me, she absolutely lost her mind.
Full on freakout mode. Then, in her excitement, she peed
all over the back seat lol. I love her to death. |
/u/VelocityGrrl39 I don't really understand how anyone could not want that
sort of love in their life. |
/u/Sushigami I do i'm just not prepared to look after a dog |
/u/Flannel-Beard Honestly good on you for recognizing that, though. I
hope one day, should you still want to, you'll have a
chance to have a dog of your own as that statement alone
is a helluva good indicator you'd be a good owner. |
/u/Sushigami I like travel too much I'm afraid. Maybe when i'm a lot
older |
/u/Proud_Accident_5873 "The second she saw me, she absolutely lost her mind.
Full on freakout mode. Then, in her excitement, she peed
all over the back seat lol"
Hey, it happens to the best of us! |
/u/PersnicketyPuddle The heart is strong, but the bladder is not |
/u/tonysnark81 Wait...your mom or your dog? |
/u/Sixgoldenrings Your username checks out 😅 |
/u/heat13ny Whenever we leave the house for more than a couple hours
we just go ahead and bring the dog outside the second we
get back. She doesn't make it down more than a couple
steps before she pisses herself in excitement.
It genuinely takes only a few hours. We can't go
shopping for too long without her thinking we're gone
for good. |
/u/z00k33per0304 My mom has a sign in the bathroom that says have a seat
a dog will be with you shortly. I need one for my house.
I have three dogs and the two younger ones follow me
everywhere. They've heard "I don't need emotional
support to go to the bathroom, I've been doing it for
more than 3 decades" and "I'm just going to switch the
laundry over/get a drink" SO many times. Mercifully my
110+ pound old man pup knows I'd never leave him and
just waits for me to come back so he can resume snuggles
or just being near me. He saves my sanity daily. |
/u/civilwar142pa My dog is in between yours. He'll wait when I tell him
I'll be right back, but if he thinks I've been gone too
long he'll come to check on me lol |
/u/Mochamonroe Isnt it awesome to be so unconditionally loved? |
/u/_Ol_Greg A whole human minute? Do you know how long that is in
dog minutes?! |
/u/PickleInDaButt My rescue bulldog disregards everything else in the
world but me. I mean he will legitimately go greet
someone coming into the door with a sniff, realize it's
not me, and come sprinting back to me... even if he got
up from the couch when sitting with me. |
/u/kirito4318 Right. Doesn't matter if it's been 1 minute or four
hours. One of my favorite things is coming home after
work and closing my car door to hear my dog start
barking in excitement. |
/u/Plane_Composer5280 There's always at least 1 happy when I arrive home |
/u/EinSchurzAufReisen That's about 7 dog minutes or so, you could have gone
anywhere! |
/u/MRSRN65 100%. If I go to the bathroom, I'm accosted the minute I
come out. It's like I was gone to war for a year. |
/u/RalphFTW Doesn't matter if you away for a 1 minute, 1 hour. 1
year... dog love and excitement is unmatched |
/u/cire1184 My dog is weird. She doesn't get excited if I come home
and nobody else is home. But if someone else is home and
then I come home she is super excited. No idea why. |
/u/orangeyougladiator My dog takes the trash out and returns with the 1000
yard stare because there's no more to take |
/u/Entirely-of-cheese Yep. Take the trash out, come back and it's like you've
been gone for a week. The vid is still really nice
though. |
/u/Mindless_Track_449 Made me smile on a difficult day 🤩 |
/u/sungazrr I hope your day gets better. 🙂 |
/u/ravnhjarta "Wait wait wait... I recognize that scent!.. now where
coul- person!!! Person person!" |
/u/orangeyougladiator And she's like "forget! forget!!! Fuuuuck!" |
/u/DadoReddit86 He looked dead at her before smelling her . |
/u/Lockdown-_- He smelt her at 0:20, looked at her at 0:27, you can see
him searching around to find her. |
/u/zipzaparooni You are completely right. He is like,"Sniff Whoa where
is she?? Not you... not you... That woman was here
before... Wait is she just standing there? Sniff It's
you!!!" |
/u/Ballsofpoo I firmly believe animals don't recognize us if we're
wearing wildly different clothes, a hat, glasses, if
that's what they're not used to. I have a cat that
didn't recognize me for a few days when I wore a hat |
/u/kevlarus80 My cat always gets a bit wary when I grow a beard. |
/u/snarlinaardvark My cat shits in my breakfast cereal if I don't comb my
hair. |
/u/SpecialistCute3263 My cat commits horrific war crimes if I wear different
socks. |
/u/Moist_Sun_8201 Clothes don't fool a dog, they just don't rely on sight
as much as humans because their sense of smell is so
much better. They can literally tell time using their
sense of smell |
/u/Folco34 My dog couldn't recognize me if I had an helmet on, and
would start to bark at me, even if I just left the
house, but would calm down the instant I took it down |
/u/Drow_Femboy Yeah, he saw but clearly didn't realize who it was until
catching a whiff. |
/u/zipzaparooni I think he catches a whiff at :20 and gets excited and
looks around, makes eye contact at :27, then does a
confirmation whiff before going bonkers. |
/u/raknor88 Dogs rely on smell far more than sight. Also, depending
on how long since he saw her she might have change
visually enough. But her smell is still the same. |
/u/Kraeftluder I think I've read somewhere or seen in a documentary
that dog vision is much more attuned to track moving
targets, and are not as good (generally, there are
always exceptions, but none of mine ever were) at static
objects. |
/u/missnaviqueen How do they remember? |
/u/fraze2000 I absolutely love these videos of reunions between dogs
and people they haven't seen for a while. There is
always an initial hesitation but then you can see the
exact moment they get a whiff of the scent and they can
barely control their emotion. It is beautiful to see the
love and excitement dogs show for the humans they care
about. |
/u/marr Bros be short sighted. |
/u/Yuck-Fou94 Thats enough reddit for the day. (Lets leave now on a
happy post instead of something disturbing 😆) |
/u/Manda_lorian39 I had the same thought. Between this and r/bald, I've
had two good ones on a row. It's a good streak. Gonna
watch it one more time then close out for the day. |
/u/MonteSilence a good reminder :) im leaving with this video in mind
after i post this comment |
/u/MediumAwkwardly The pause. Just 🥹 |
/u/will_this_1_work We bring my dog back to our friend ms house who
initially fostered her and her 5 siblings. The second we
turn onto our friends street our dogs tail starts going
crazy. We open our car door and she can't get to her
front door fast enough. If no one answers there, she
hauls ass around the house knowing theirs a dog door.
The she rules the roost.
This all from a 15 year old dog. |
/u/BumblebeeInternal294 💖💖💖💖 I love this! |
/u/Twitch791 Not remembers caught her smell. He never forgot her |
/u/Fearless_Dependent29 Woah dogs remember smells better than faces and
clothing? Crazy |
/u/ImSoObnoxious even in humans, the sense of smell (olfaction) is more
directly tied to memory than any other sense. a dementia
patient will forget your face long before they forget
the smell of their Grandma's chicken Parm or the perfume
she wore. mammal brains are fascinating |
/u/Shambledown I've never really had a sense of smell, it's bonkers to
me that it's even important. Apparently I'm missing out
in a huge way.
On the other side, I've been in situations where
everyone else is gagging because of the smell and been
fine, so 🤷 |
/u/para_diddle A pretty good tradeoff |
/u/ImSoObnoxious it's called anosmia, and while there are plenty of
things you don't want to smell (ever been to Paris?) I
would say you're missing out on some good stuff too. but
you can't miss what you never had, curious if you can
taste food like most others |
/u/Shambledown I met the guy who founded the UK Anosmia society and he
was confused that I wouldn't join. I had to explain that
he'd lost his and missed it and that I'd never had that
sense so wasn't suffering from anything haha.
I can certainly taste my food, but I'm assuming it's
far more limited than most. I tend to like things to be
crispy, I'm guessing texture is more important to me. |
/u/ImSoObnoxious and my questions come from a place of genuineness and
curiosity. I run some fragrance social media groups and
make my own small line of fragrances; it's an integral
part of my life. if we could 'turn on' your smell for a
few minutes, I'd take you to a lilac bush and a bakery.
but that would just be mean I guess, because then you'd
actually know what you were missing. cool part for you
is your partner can have taco bell whenever they want
though! |
/u/RenderedCreed Very common. Their sense of smell is much better than
their vision so most of the time that's how they
remember things. |
/u/lawaythrow Another reason why I like these videos is, you never
doubt if these are scripted or staged. You can see the
dog taking time to recognize and then lose its mind |
/u/brightsidereporter Oh, it's you! I remember you, thank you so much. |
/u/LimpConnection8686 This one always gets me. The way they pause and then it
just clicks for them is pure gold. |
/u/XD2006- Bro is just pure happiness. I may be terrified of dogs,
but I might save one if I needed to. |
/u/141bpm Let a doggy save *you*. |
/u/BlunderBlumpkin My dog does this to my little brother because he left a
spaghetti sandwich out a week after I adopted her. She
will never forget it. |
/u/jowns7 I enjoyed every bit of imagining your statement. Thank
you 😊 |
/u/No-Sandwich1511 They need the smell should have brought him right past
her for a quicker reaction. |
/u/FarneticoToro My dog is asleep on the sofa next to me, snoring away.
Seeing videos like this make me appreciate them even
more, they're the most incredible creatures on this
planet. Pure love. |
/u/wisdomnotforthewise I love you forever! Let me demonstrate that by
HEADBUTTING YOU IN THE CHIN.
Adorable. But a menace. Adorable menace. |
/u/tea-drinker IT SMELLS LIKE HOPE! |
/u/DependentHighlight44 I saved one stray dog life too, I used to go give her
meds and fluids in the rain. When i see that she is
healthy and happy it gives me happiness. I don't know
how she realizes that I am nearby, but she runs like
crazy towards me. |
/u/reasimoes do you smell it? That smell. A kind of smelly smell. The
smelly smell that smells... Smelly. |
/u/Less-Inflation5072 For a second there I didn't think anything was going to
happen and I felt bad for the girl lol then BAM |
/u/elenorfighter He smelt something familiar. |
/u/Alarmed_Drop7162 I sometimes think dog's vision is really bad. |
/u/amiapsychothough Hilarious how he smelled her but looked at everyone out
there except her. 🤣🤣😭😭😭 |
/u/vegasbywayofLA 2 watches later and I'm still smiling |
/u/CookbookChef This is so beautiful.
Years ago, my wife and i rescued a cat whose tail was
chopped off in a car engine. We found a rescue group to
take him and and brought him directly to the vet who
fixed up his tail. We thought about him, but we couldn't
adopt him at the time.
About a month later I came across a the same rescue
group at an adopt a pet event and asked them about him.
The woman who fostered him was there and said that his
was at a Petco about 30 miles away. The next day we went
to the store to see the cat. At the time, Petco was a
lot looser with cats up for adoption and when we
arrived, we asked the employee at the register if they
knew about the cat. Before we finished, the cat
recognized my wife's voice and ran across the shelves
and right to her.
He was adopted the next day. We still think about him
all the time. He was a very cool cat. |
/u/GreatTea3415 Cows and pigs do this, too. |
/u/Ripley_and_Jones I have a rescue. She does this every time I am out of
the house for more than ten minutes. Just love her. |
/u/ImpossibleNothing636 Dog was like "CHERYL!.!?! No way! Girl it has been
forever!" |
/u/SeedyEdie Could there possibly be anything better than a bouncy
happy dog? |
/u/GordonBombay102 We didn't save him because he's the cutest god damn dog
in the world and we had to battle 573 other people to
adopt him, but, our dude literally jumps into my arms
every time I come home and nothing in the entire world
will ever be better. |
/u/Sunny_stormclouds "It smells like safety and love in here .. I wonder
where is it coming from?" |
/u/dvdmaven Dog: I can smell her, but nobody around here looks
right. Then she speaks. |
/u/Lexi_Banner Took my dog with me to our Pride Parade today. We met a
friend there. I could see that Dennis instantly
recognized him, and that he was thrilled to randomly see
him. |
/u/langy87 Been having a tough mental health slump.
First time I've smiled in a while. |
