/u/moonmama888 They never cover the swim diapers and it looks so stupid
lol. |
/u/SunOutside746 I feel this way about girls shorts. My toddler isn't
going to be wearing daisy dukes. |
/u/UNMANAGEABLE Costco had some great toddler swimsuits for girls that
had both shorts and long sleeve |
/u/jlaurw Yes! Costco has sets that have the adorable swim skirts
with the rash guards. |
/u/FOMODollCollector They have swimming trunks for adult women this year too.
No top, just the shorts with built-in underwear of same
color as the shorts. |
/u/Kihav There are even great options that are more like a tennis
skirt or shorts with an under layer and I have female
adult friends that still prefer setups like that |
/u/bianca_fathom I certainly am one of them, I don't need to show my butt
to strangers |
/u/Kihav I had a friend who was a roommate for a while who had
been (maybe still occasionally) a dancer, and still in
any other normal scenario the least she would wear was
maybe some boy shorts and a crop top.
It's wild what some people put on their kids these days |
/u/Engine_Mammoth That's what we did. Trunks and rash guard, there are
some very cool swim trunks out there. |
/u/IKnowAllSeven All my kids were in rash guards as kids. Did you know
that childhood is when UV exposure is most dangerous
because young skin is thinner, has less melanin, and
blistering sunburns during youth can double melanoma
risk?
Protecting your kids from the sun is fairly easy and
helps protect yhem against sun damage.
My kids NEVER had a sunburn, at least nothing nearly as
bad as I did as a kid. I remember just feeling off
strips of skin as kid.
Anyway, just saying , rash guards, and other protective
sun gear is critical and good on you for recognizing
that! |
/u/Engine_Mammoth 100%, and we all should be wearing sunscreen,! |
/u/GreenLentils850 I haven't had the skin peeling in years.. since I was
like 12 haha I had so much fun (minus the burn) peeling
it off |
/u/Beastcoastboarder They make onesies for tots. Girls ones are avail with
long sleeves and shorts. Provides spf 50 protection |
/u/Nimue_- Girl, i struggle with that as an adult woman. The inseam
is almost non-existant for most shorts. I got thighs, i
don't need the chub rub |
/u/bananakittymeow Yes! This! It's so hard to find cute shorts that are
long enough protect my inner thighs from being rubbed
raw. |
/u/Shamboozled_you_is I'm 57 and anything less than a 4" inseam is no bueno.
It sucks because I love American Eagle but most of their
shorts are more like thongs. |
/u/ConstructionMuch802 Or a bikini wax every time I want to go swimming! |
/u/MommaOfManyCats Oh man, this gets to me! I love capris pants but they're
apparently almost impossible to find this year. All
shorts, even plus size, are like 3 inches or less. I
returned a pair I bought online because they were
shorter than my short pjs! |
/u/jsjones1027 I toldy husband a while ago and he didn't believe me. We
went to buy some shorts for our, then, 12 month old
daughter. We couldn't believe how short the girls shorts
are. We bought 'boys' shorts and he's now on my side
with dressing her in gender neutral clothing. |
/u/cheercharlatan Finding anything that feels even remotely an appropriate
length for my tween causes a huge argument every time we
need to shop. It sucks.
So sorry to inform you that that problem isn't
improving anytime in the next decade. |
/u/userdoesnotexist22 It is so tough, you'd think with so many schools
requiring requiring the shorts to be past the fingertips
that they could make some longer options. Of course I
was saying the same thing for myself 25 years ago. |
/u/1heart1totaleclipse Shorts past my fingertips would have me showing my butt.
That is such a weird measure to go by. |
/u/_kehd Things to look forward to
https://giphy.com/gifs/G1vplGMypxBcp7kx32 |
/u/SadMaryJane The sarcasm went over my head like superman for moment
there. |
/u/Ancient_Yellow_709 Ugh, I remember this stage. It felt so embarrassing to
shop in the boys section (and also what the heck was
that mesh upfront? I did not understand that until much
later, lol) but...the girls shorts all were basically
underwear unless you got athletic unisex ones.
It's terrible but I'm glad the trend is at least on the
side of baggy clothes now for kids. |
/u/FullMooseParty I just had a friend say that she hoped everything for
her daughters went back to when we were teens in the
early 90s when even the girls stuff was super baggy |
/u/Ceofy I saw a tween at a grocery store the other day and had
the realization that my dad had always been right, my
clothes had been too short |
/u/HBJones1056 Man, I remember how much this sucked when my kids were
tweens. They had a friend whose mom had a zero tolerance
policy for short shorts, plus the girl was on the
curvier side, so the only way the poor kid could find
shorts that fit and were long enough to satisfy her mom
was to make her own cutoffs out of pants. |
/u/NerdEmoji My tween has a booty on her and due to that, I had to
upsize her to shorts from the women's department. XS and
S overlap with the upper kid sizes.
Not the juniors department though. I was out shopping
today, picking up more shorts, and just thought, hey
wonder what shorts they have in the juniors section.
Whoa, I don't even know how those can be called shorts.
One inch inseam and the waist rolls down? Are you
kidding me? It was like a scrap of fabric. |
/u/gerenukftw JC Penneys had been the go to while my girls were in
junior high and high school. They, as adults, can wear
whatever they want, but they still go there for shorts.
Thankfully, I didn't have to fight with them about
appropriate length for shorts and skirts. |
/u/dansamy I literally took a picture one summer off my children's
shorts. Same size. The boys shorts were TWO INCHES
LONGER |
/u/michellethestan I buy most of my 2.5 yo's clothes in big lots on FB
marketplace, which saves us money but is a gamble. I
typically end up donating a handful of things from each
batch for various reasons, but this time I flat out
threw away a pair of jorts so short the pockets hung out
and with multiple manufactured holes all over for even
more skin (and diaper???) reveal. Sorry to the
environment but absolutely no child should be wearing
that. |
/u/Busterlimes Bro, why the fuck would people even manufacture those? |
/u/iDoWeird I asked myself the same question when I passed my first
bougie hootchie training gear boutique (infant to under
10 in sizes, if they even went THAT old...) in
Louisiana. Nothing kills your soul like seeing fluffy
leopard crop sweaters that have "SEXY" written in
sequins paired on the rack with pleather mini skirts for
BABIES. |
/u/ThisIsTheTimeToRem Gotta start training girls early on feeling semi
comfortable exposing their bodies for others to see. |
/u/Own_Nefariousness434 Because way too many parents want it.
I don't understand it. Like what parent wants their kid
to look "sexy"? But somehow they do. I'm guessing they
think it's edgy? Or it appeals to what they find
fashionable from years of marketing/brainwashing? No
idea for sure though.
But the market wouldn't supply it if there wasn't a
demand for it. |
/u/MajesticKoala3332 Could also be that adult trends are being applied to
kids clothing and most parents just buy whatever the
store has without thinking about it |
/u/Stock-Cell1556 At that age (and all through their grade school years
for most kids), their bodies are similar enough that
girls can easily wear boys clothes. Once they get closer
to puberty it starts to get harder. |
/u/Sea_Literature115 Same - I buy boys shorts for my daughter because it's so
vile. They're usually cheaper too! The inseam in some of
these girl shorts are like 1-2 inches and it's obnoxious
if not bordering pedophilic. |
/u/Future-Original-2902 Thats crazy its cheaper for more material |
/u/Tree_pineapple pink tax starts at birth |
/u/suesing I'm appalled they make them |
/u/NaiveMelody__ A lot of us used to buy our girls shorts from the boys
section. |
/u/itsheatheragain Just here to advocate for bright colored swim wear. I
would try to find the trunks in a different color.

/u/qwelianiop I appreciate the concern this was taken into
consideration and her top is bright pink! |
/u/Brilliant-Version704 Such a good point also! |
/u/anafroes Oh wow I have not thought of this. Thanks for sharing! |
/u/johnsmith98989 Can confirm. Makes a huge difference.
Same with sport cleats also. They may look like clowns,
but I can pick my kids out on a field or in a crowded
pool very fast. |
/u/West-Application-375 This is a great chart |
/u/Shiftrider never heard this before.. thank you |
/u/brokefree517 Yeah I still put shorts on my 9 year old
🤷🏿♂️ |
/u/IWillBeHokage_3 My wife still wears shorts. Bikinis nowadays are insane |
/u/colorful_withdrawl I wear a romper swimsuit. Its a one piece but has shorts
attached. Its so much more comfortable then hanging out
in public in my basically my underwear |
/u/rutilated_quartz this is why I like the retro one pieces where they have
the little skirt part at the bottom! I'm not necessarily
into modesty so much as the ability to just exist in
public without feeling like I'm a second away from a
wardrobe malfunction

/u/NarwhalEmergency9391 That's so cute!! But it's still to much for me. I don't
know, I just hate showing my butt cheeks to anyone
except my man.. I'll always reach for a swim skort or
shorts |
/u/colorful_withdrawl Same. I always feel like im going to flash someone. Or
if i didnt shave recently 🤣 |
/u/cmstyles2006 This. I had to explain to my aunt, I'm not being like a
mormon or smthn, I like my shorts and crop tankini
because I feel comfortable and secure to move however. |
/u/nowwithextrasalt I had one of those in retro red gingham print! They are
so comfy! |
/u/Goldiblockzs Yess this is my beach fave these are great |
/u/cpdx82 I finally bought a rash guard last week because
unfortunately no matter what kind of swimsuit I buy I
have to wear a bra underneath or I have spillage or they
naturally go south. I got my rash guard and it locks
them in place and covers everything so I can actually
have fun at the pool with my kids. |
/u/kiwigyoza I am 35 and still wear the shorts or the skirts.
Don't have to worry about razor bumps or bikinis
bunching up lol |
/u/West-Application-375 I wear swim leggings because I want to limit sun
exposure and cancer risk. I love not shaving. But
they're difficult as hellll to remove when they're wet
lol |
/u/sin-omelet I had an ex who found it weird that I (as an adult
woman) wear swim shorts over top one-piece suits, and he
would claim no other women did this. Always thought that
was a weird hill for him to die on |
/u/Doctorsl1m Lots of them are basically lingerie lol |
/u/AbramJH my wife also wears shorts |
/u/MadeThisForLumity i always wear swimshorts |
/u/hotcoffeethanks https://preview.redd.it/qycacr78r57h1.jpeg?width=1170&fo

idk if you're in the US but for anyone in Canada
looking for good toddler swim suits!! I love Souris
Mini, it's not the cheapest but they're. So cute. |
/u/dcdcdani I buy all of my daughter's shorts in the boys section to
make sure her butt is actually covered |
/u/TranquilizedTea And it cost less than what's available for girls. |
/u/NotAZombieStopAsking I feel like people who are upset by this section of the
gender war forgot that it's still legal for little girls
to wear the trunks.
It's like "the pink tax". Just buy the razor with the
picture of a guy on the box, nobody will stop you. |
/u/7Broncos18 https://giphy.com/gifs/L17xM7PvLcqJggsCYa
Congress taking notes on what to make illegal next. |
/u/WhatTheFlox Had to buy razer blades at dollar tree maybe 15 years
ago, the pink ones labeled for women had 2 more blades
than the blue ones labeled for men.
The blue ones sucked so bad even for dollar tree
prices.
Definitely bought the pink till I could get better
ones. |
/u/Calgary_Calico Exactly! We don't NEED the pretty pink one lol. I buy
generic razor blades, use men's skin care products and
buy men's pants whenever possible because I LIKE
POCKETS. There's only a few things specifically marketed
to women that I buy for myself |
/u/poppitastic To keep my boy/girl twins clothes similar but different,
and similar toys (balls, bubble wands, etc), we picked
pink and yellow for her and blue and green for him. She
ended up liking black and purple and blues. He adored
pink... like his fave t-shirts were super bright
almost-magenta pink, and his tablet covers were pink,
etc. (he'd steal hers). They were very much themselves
from like age 2. |
/u/K-Bizzle91 I'm an adult woman and I wear men's trunks and a rash
guard. It's more comfortable to me. |
/u/turnitwayup Same. Bikini under men's swim trunks & long sleeve
women's rash guard. I don't want to get burned either on
the river or hot springs. |
/u/NeoSuperconductivity I wear swim capris and a rash-guard: modest, comfy and
sun-protection! |
/u/SnooOnions5029 Yeah but I think OP's point is that we shouldn't have to
resort to buying boy trunks for girls because these
companies make the girls ones way too revealing and
inappropriate |
/u/ExcitableDolphin That is not the point. We shouldn't even have bikini
style swimwear for girls under like 14. |
/u/Consistent_Draft6454 My daughter is very tall. She HAS to wear a two-piece
because her torso is too long to wear a one-piece
without fabric riding up places that it shouldn't. There
are modest 2 pieces believe it or not. They are called
Tankini's.

/u/Necessary_cat735 and they're so much more convenient when you need the
loo! |
/u/bigredpapaya My 4 year old is obnoxiously tall for her age and every
one piece suit always rides up or you size up and then
it doesn't cover the way it's supposed to. All that to
just say tankinis are a life saver |
/u/MysteriousFee2873 I was short and petite. One piece would either try to be
in me or super baggy. So yeah. I always had to have two
pieces |
/u/Fazl They exist because parents continue to buy them, so.... |
/u/Jolly-Pattern4486 This. Just buy the boy trunks and call it a day. They're
basically the same thing without the awkward cut |
/u/corporateacademia Not the point though. Why are we making bikinis for
toddlers |
/u/ChiaDaisy Toddler swimsuits should absolutely be two pieces for
ease of changing and bathroom... but that doesn't mean
it needs to be bikini! Shorts and long sleeve sun
protection!! |
/u/corporateacademia Yeah exactly. I have a boy so i haven't had this problem
but i did grow up a girl lol. At 29 I'm still having
trouble finding shorts that don't go up your butt.
They're just not practical lol. We always do rash guard
and shorts! |
/u/daXypher There has been a very real problem with the blurring of
lines between children and adult fashion that seems to
be unique to young girls. I've really had a problem with
it and I'm glad to see other parents starting to notice
as well. |
/u/corporateacademia Yes. And what bothers me the most is people who go
"maybe you're the problem if you're thinking about it
that way". Like no my point is there's horrible people
on this planet who do horrible things to little girls
and csam isn't just nudity. These kinds of outfits and
photos are used as csam so why are we just letting rape
culture take over our toddlers fashion |
/u/grruser I got downvoted to hell on reddit for asking this a year
or so ago. Good to see there is movement. |
/u/straightpipedhose I don't think OPs issue is not being able to find a
solution. I think their issue is how apparently every
option in the girls section is a bikini. |
/u/TheFightingQuaker Yeah i see these posts all the time and think about
this. It would be a non issue for me, just buy the boys
clothes.
Also, wtf are we doing making bikins for children?? |
/u/qwelianiop Thats my point! I kept trying to find some cute shorts
for my daughter but there were no single swim shorts or
sets with shorts. I had to go to the boys section to
find something that would properly cover her butt |
/u/brenpeter My daughter is 2... trying to find stuff that A) fits
her and B) doesn't look like a thong, it's infuriating!
Had to get some "boys shorts" to put on her over the
one-piece suit we got for her. |
/u/I_comment_on_stuff_ Try something like this. We've bought this style since
our daughter was a toddler, she's 7 now. 2 piece types
are WAY easier when you're potty training, but
long-sleeved and skirt bottom offer plenty of sun
protection. https://a.co/d/09x7Qdxk |
/u/Realistic-Run-1092 I can't believe it's this hard to find non-bikinis for
little girls. Who's designing childrenswear these days?? |
/u/poppitastic It's not "these days". I had the same problem with my
oldest, who is almost 30. I remember even as a teen I
was creeped out by my little female cousin's swimwear.
It was easier to get regular clothes that were decent
back for oldest, much harder with my now-20yo. Low cut
shirts, daisy dukes... and honestly when I mention it
nowadays, people jump my butt because apparently it's ME
that's sexualizing kids by thinking that other people
will. Actually, that attitude has decreased since
Epstein became a "thing", but I was seriously vilified
for years because I wanted our kids to dress more
modestly. |
/u/rrfe I remember this being discussed by a mother circa 1988.
It's been a problem for 40 years. |
/u/dj_underboob Realistically, unless it has snaps in the gusset, it's a
pain to change a diaper when a kid is in a one piece.
Easier to pull off a bottom and leave the top on. That
said, a two piece is not the same as a bikini. I have a
boy and a girl, both wear long sleeved swim shirts with
separate bottoms. |
/u/michellethestan This has been literally true since millennials were
young and we were being sold Limited Too and all of that
style of fashion of the early 2000s. Les Wexner, who
owned that brand, had Epstein as his finance manager. |
/u/OGLikeablefellow Yeah what's wild is apparently everyone who is in a
position to do anything about it is just ok with it. We
really need to all get a line on our pitchforks, I know
where mine is |
/u/Chatty-Hedgehog I agree with you, OP! We're getting shorts from the boys
section. But that means that it's either something tiny
and revealing or a double expense with no in-between IS
infuriating. They're kids, no one needs to see their
cheeks... or a swim diaper while they're needing it |
/u/Safe_Violinist_4128 maybe if we just called them swimming shorts (neutral)
and a swimming bikini (neutral) then now there is no
gender, as parents you're already saying that these
clothes are boyish, imagine that impact going down to
the impressionabke mind of a child, oh those are boy
shorts, I won't wear that gymnastics or wrestling
leotard because tights are for girls, this is what this
is, just don't give your prejudice to your child edited
to add: I'm not aiming at you or just wanted to make
sure everyone saw the idea |
/u/I_comment_on_stuff_ We buy our daughter (7) swim suits on Amazon. Not ideal
to be shopping there, but they have T-shirt 2-pieces
with cute skirt options. The skirt coveres more like the
trunks. I also see plenty of shorts options. We find a
two piece is easier for her to take potty breaks. We do
either the T or long slevee. Most of her friends at her
summer camp have something similar. |
/u/Scared-Two-5208 i mean it kinda sucks you have to buy a seperate pair of
trunks. Kids swimsuits are usually always sold as a set,
you can't really find just the top alone. Meaning you
end up spending more money |
/u/hometown_nero This is not the point. |
/u/MadeThisForLumity i thought ur avatar was mine at first |
/u/qwelianiop Im tossing the girl bottoms honestly |
/u/Cute_Chance100 I wore shorts with my bathing suit as a kid. When I
worked at a summer camp I saw girls who wore what looked
liked bright pink jumpers/rompers? Like a wet suit for
bodybuilding for surfing. Not sure what they are called.
It had legs to their knees and short sleeves. One kid
wore one cause she burned in sunlight. It saved on
sunscreen. I wish I had that as a kid. |
/u/IIRCIreadthat Rash guard, I think is the term you're looking for. |
/u/ezmoney98 https://giphy.com/gifs/13PR67zViZjXi |
/u/Mother-Initial-7154 It's not the point. The point is, why are they making
toddler bathing suites like that?? |
