After Geri Halliwell (aka Ginger Spice) quit the Spice Girls in 1998, George Michael provided her with a place to stay after the birth of her first child and became her mentor/close friend. She later named her son after George, who died in December 2016 while she was pregnant.

lots of great stories about George. Amazing human being
/u/waitingforthesun92
Yup. I thought I've heard every good-faith story about
George by now (and there's a lot!). Happened to come
across this one today and needless to say, I'm delighted
but unsurprised. This man was an angel who left us too
early.
/u/BackgroundCold5307
True, couldn't agree more.
/u/Popular-Brilliant349
Because you gotta have faith!
/u/Zebidee
Faith, a faith, a faith.
/u/BigFanOfNachoLibre
This sub doesn't allow gifs so pretend this comment is
that one F4 gif
/u/TufnelAndI
He was kind of a Cowboy too.
/u/sasshley_
He deserved so much better than how he was treated. So
many stories about him just make me so sad.
/u/Khetoo
I think if you have a brain, if you were around how
British media treated Diana and then 25 years later
Meghan, it's easy to pretty much dismiss anything
related to Britain and celebrities. They're pretty much
dredging the fucking Thames and using magic to make
golems of all the rot and filth down there to write
articles about people.
/u/runnerofshadows
All while ignoring the real monsters like Saville until
they're dead.
/u/sunnydarkgreen
now in my 50s, if rich mens media tells me to hate
someone i assume they're doing something right.
/u/Comfortable_Style_51
I knew he was a monster, but recently the podcast Behind
The Bastards did a four part series ob him and it's so
much worse than any article I ever read about him. The
amount of outright complicity that took place in various
organizations in the UK is staggering. It doesn't
surprise me one iota that Prince Andrew is in such hot
water, I'm sure more people around him are just as
guilty.
/u/Academic_Dig_1567
Problem is rumors were circulating about saville in the
'80s, but he was protected, especially after the
knighthood.
/u/Illustrious-Milk6518
They were circulating around him as early as the 70's
/u/sharktoucher
Those episodes were so difficult to get through, ive
never felt so angry and at the same time completely
despondent.
/u/echoshaunt
i think they tried to make a bones spin off based on
dredging the Thames, and found a british celeb/royalty
or something
/u/NashKetchum777
Idk if Meghan should be in the same convo as them but
sure.
/u/JimiJab
Same can be said about Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman)
/u/OverJohn
I've never been a huge GM fan, though I appreciate he
certainly was talented.

However, I know someone who knew George Michael very
well for many years and from what they have told me he
was genuinely and without exception extremely nice.
/u/Lazykatlady
He really is, and Ginger spice is my favorite spice girl
too.
/u/ShyCrystal69
The only thing wrong with her is her taste in men
/u/Civil_Tea_3250
Can't blame her though. She's been told she's not good
enough and she needs to be attractive to every single
man 24/7. It's crazy more big stars aren't completely
messed up, or maybe that's an additional pressure they
need to deal with because the public would be nasty to
them regardless.
/u/paone00022
Aside from Posh everyone had had a bad time picking men
right. The industry they're working in at that time made
it harder
/u/Excusemytootie
Posh married a serial cheater, not ideal.
/u/Civil_Tea_3250
Well, it seemed that way maybe, until her son came out
with that story about her basically trying to make love
to him in front of people. I always thought David seemed
realish and helped make her more palatable.
/u/mamyers992
Who is the "him" referring to in your sentence?
/u/elderlybrain
Yeah for years i thought he was this super lame generic
80s singer, then after his death turns out to have been
one of the biggest nice guys in the celebrity world.

Also careless whisper still slaps
/u/carakangaran
Just him singing "Somebody to love" during the tribute
concert was enough to convince young me that he was a
great singer.
/u/twentytwo_a
Couldn't agree more. I don't think he ever got the full
credit he deserved as a vocalist, songwriter, or
musician.
/u/Tasty_Film
Underrated human being
/u/Rosetti
Snappy snaps might disagree lol.
/u/Dull_Quit3027
I often think about helping people, but I do not have
the resources(both mental and physical), and that makes
me feel really bad about myself, which diminishes the
mental recourses available to me, isn't being human fun
😛
/u/TimmehJ
George was a brilliant human by all accounts
/u/mdavis360
I read that in his later years he would watch singing
competition reality shows or something like that and if
a contestants life story moved him, he would anonymously
donate to them to help them out.
/u/TonyzTone
So you could say he was a sort of father figure to them
and helped them keep faith after a hard day. They were
probably waiting for that day where they could heal the
pain, set their soul free and yell "freedom" once and
for all.
/u/nick1978
More updoots needed here. Made me smile and giggle.
/u/jammymarmitejar
He thought how can I help you? Please let me try to, I
can heal the pain that you're feeling inside.
/u/Ritaredditonce
Unfortunately his past boyfriends were leeches who took
advantage of his generosity.
/u/Bostonterrierpug
I love the video of both young George and Morrissey
talking about Joy Division. Of course Morrissey is a
complete pompous ass while George is one smart and kind
guy.
/u/ggg730
I have really never heard anyone say anything nice about
Morrissey besides his music.
/u/AEnema18
Heaven knows he's miserable now
/u/GettingTherapissed
The strangest thing about this is that his music is
fucking terrible, too.
/u/TheDebonairQuokka
He was one of the good ones. So many people he helped
never knew it was from him.
/u/Cpt-Redbags
And on the flipside you have "influencers" buying
groceries or giving a homeless man a makeover while
putting a camera in their face for subs. Most things on
social media are degenerate but exploiting the less
fortunate for likes and subscribes because you gave
someone $100 is some twisted stuff.

If you're a good person you don't need to prove that to
anyone.
/u/Ithikari
Honestly, buying homeless people food for likes and
shit, while I am not going to view those people as
morally good and doing it because they are good people
because they ain't, you gotta sometimes take the good
with the bad. Be glad a shit person at least is helping
feed them, even if its only for a day or a week.
/u/Sugarbombs
This is my thought too, it's exploitative and the
motivation is corrupt but I bet that homeless person is
very happy with $100 they otherwise wouldn't have.
Ideally we all help people who need it out of pure
empathy and desire to create a better world but while we
wait for that utopia sometimes this is the best we get
/u/Gay_Asian_Boy
Why did Geri Halliwell need anyone to provide her a
place to stay? She's one of the Spice Girls and her
first album did quite well in the UK.
/u/houseofprimetofu
Paparazzi in the UK is atrocious. He may have had a very
safe and secure place away from the paps. And, friends
helping friends is a thing.
/u/blankedboy
Robbie Williams tells a story about having to carry her
out of his flat in a bag over his shoulder because there
were so many paparazzi outside 24/7 trying to get a
picture of them together.
/u/Laiko_Kairen
Daniel Radcliffe wore the same clothes home every day so
the paparazzi couldn't get new looking pics of him to
sell
/u/GodOfDarkLaughter
Guarantee if that happened today there'd be plenty of
social media accounts counting the days hoping it'd get
as high as possible with him wearing the same thing and
they'd want pictures of him in the outfit every day.
People are sick.
/u/Iusedthistocomment
People are bored, and some people are too hung up on the
bored people's record taking of reality.
/u/nicknoxx
Princess Di did the same a generation earlier.
/u/Uuuurrrrgggghhhh
Yessss the gym bag!!! People were going past in double
decker buses with big cameras just bombarding his house
trying to get any photo of her they could. Wild.
/u/Skittleschild02
She was being hunted down by paparazzi. They're looking
exclusives about her departure. Princess Diana's death
had spooked a lot of celebrities.
/u/alvehyanna
A lot of boy/girl groups back then had shit contracts
and made almost nothing.
/u/enadiz_reccos
A lot of groups not named the Spice Girls

Saying Geri Halliwell couldn't afford a place to live
in 1998 is wild
/u/Inside-Example-7010
maybe she had some sort of issues with being alone and
being with george gave her the security and
companionship of living with a guy without the need to
worry about it being more.
/u/enadiz_reccos
Oh yeah, it had to be a companionship/support thing

I just laughed seeing someone say Geri couldn't afford
to live on her own
/u/deten
This is how we fanfic our way into "freeing Brittany".
/u/thehideousheart
maybe makes a load of stuff up?
/u/Inside-Example-7010
maybe it's maybelline.
/u/IdiotAbroad77
Lol thanks for reminding me of this
/u/Deaftoned
Do you not know the definition of "maybe"?
/u/cocoagiant
A lot of groups not named the Spice Girls

You would think the same for The Beatles, Backstreet
Boys and NSync but members from all have talked about
how little money they actually were receiving.
/u/Unfair_Web_8275
The Beatles had at least two songs about getting ripped
off.
/u/cocoagiant
Yeah, that Jude clearly was a bad guy.
/u/Unfair_Web_8275
He kept telling them to take sad songs and make them
better, which is what led to John to quitting.
/u/Wotmate01
Maybe he needed help?
/u/DeniLox
Yeah. Managers such as Lou Pearlman made themselves a
member of the group when it came to getting paid so that
they'd get paid twice (as a manager and as a member of
the group).
/u/ggg730
Brother you don't know the half of how predatory the
music industry is.
/u/gigatension
Started out in debt.
/u/CharlesDickensABox
Sometimes staying with friends in a difficult time isn't
about the money.
/u/lizzzard_sneeek
She didn't have a permanent house when her daughter was
born, I'm assuming she had been bouncing around rented
places by herself. She's said that she was struggling a
lot postpartum as a single mom so George Michael stepped
in and offered for her to stay at his house for the
weekend for some emotional support and a safe
environment. She ended up staying for 3 months while she
settled into being a new mother and was able to buy a
house in London to raise her daughter close to her
family and other friends.
/u/brownmouthwash
Maybe he was there for her emotionally while she was
pregnant on her own.
/u/Pledgeofmalfeasance
It was seriously fucking bad how the paps haunted her
back then. Girl couldn't take two steps without being
blamed for the fall of society.
/u/MacGibber
George Michael was a silent hero to many people, he is
certainly and dearly missed.
/u/SwaMaeg
Almost right. She named her baby after the George
Michael on Arrested Development.
/u/jaskmackey
Michael: Your Uncle GOB seems to think that he saw you
down at the docks today. Was that you?

George Michael: No. No. Maybe it was the other George
Michael - You know, the singer-songwriter.

Michael: Yeah, that makes sense.
/u/gorginhanson
we don't talk about season 4
/u/Urban_Heretic
Yes. That baby grew up to be Micheal Cera.
/u/fatbob42
Oh - the guy who made that hand cream?
/u/thexavikon
Let me cream hydrate you
/u/ThickDoughnut4267
Maybe she has a daughter, too
/u/SwaMaeg
Yes, She has a daughter Maybe
/u/ThickDoughnut4267
Dang you're right, your sentence is syntactically
superior to mine 🎩
/u/Clubsandiches
Either way, he could be his father figure.
/u/StoneGoldX
Not the singer/songwriter?
/u/An_Absolute-Zero
I'm assuming they were from the same neck of the woods.
George went to my secondary school and Geris mum worked
at a shopping center in the closet big town.
/u/Several_Goat5210
And then she married Christian horner :/
/u/Uuuurrrrgggghhhh
How dare he, by the way, do that to Geri. GINGER SPICE
IS HIS WIFE and he behaves like that. What a fingertip
/u/Hedge55
This is the comment I was looking for 😂
/u/Velifax
Context - George Michael was a very famous singer in
Britain in the 90s and was gay.
/u/SwaMaeg
Fuck. In my opinion. LD.
/u/DimensionFrequent29
The fact that this needs context is depressing my 50
year old ass
/u/FrostiePi
Try being just under 40 and it needing context.. I
suddenly feel very old.
/u/justmememe55
Fuck, I'm over long distance
